Sentencing set for Aug. 19

A Louisiana minister will be sentenced on Aug. 19 after pleading guilty to using stolen money orders while in Mississippi.

Printed reports said Rev. Toris Young, of New Orleans, appeared before U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee in Jackson, where he pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud and one count of using forged money orders. Two other counts were set aside.

Another man also pleaded guilty in the case, Curtis Lyons, who is also from New Orleans.

Authorities said the money orders came from a shipment stolen in New Orleans in 2005. Young used the money orders and went on a shopping spree in Mississippi.

Company fined $45,000 for violating No-Call List

A Texas-based company has been fined $45,000 for violating the Mississippi No-Call law and the rules associated with enforcing the law. Public Service Chairman Brandon Presley said Mobile Marketing Solutions, in Houston, Texas, failed to register and purchase Mississippi’s No-Call List.

Because they failed to purchase the list, their representatives subsequently contacted consumers that were registered on the No-Call List.

Mobile Marketing Solutions failed to respond to Presley’s official complaint.

Presley further said the company will be prohibited from making any calls to Mississippians as a telephone solicitor and from purchasing the No-Call List until their fine is paid in full.

Woman sexually assaulted

Clarksdale Police are investigating the case of a woman that was sexually assaulted by a male subject. The assault occurred in the 500 block of Iowa Street. No other details are available at this time.
