Panty thieves arrested in Mississippi

OXFORD – Two men have been arrested, one in North Mississippi, and another in South Mississippi, for allegedly stealing women’s undergarments during separate home invasions. An Oxford judge has denied a bond for 32-year old Joseph Paul Lillo, who stands accused of 11 counts of burglary.

Authorities said Lillo is allegedly behind several burglaries in the city and the county after he broke into numerous homes and reportedly stole women’s panties.

Lillo was arrested on Oct. 3 after witnesses reported seeing a strange vehicle in the Eagle Nest Lane vicinity late Saturday evening.

Lillo was arrested at his home in Marshall County.

“I don’t know why he did it. I don’t care why he did it. All I know is that he did it and we’ve got him in jail,” Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin told WTVA.

Martin said he is relieved Lillo has been arrested because he feels certain the suspect was capable of more serious crimes.

“You don’t know what type of individual you’re dealing with,” Martin said. “You don’t know what they are capable of and that was our feeling all along.”

Just last week, a Jackson County man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home and stole the woman’s panties. Edward Payton, 29, is charged with one count of burglary and one count of attempted burglary after authorities said he allegedly broke into a residence in Ocean Springs by ramming the door with his body.

The homeowners and their children were home at the time of the break in and notified police.

The same homeowners told police a few days earlier, they came home to find Payton inside their house, and they chased him out the back door.

They later discovered the wife’s undergarments missing.

Payton, a registered sex offender, was charged with sexual battery in Harrison County in 2005. Payton is currently on probation.
