Water was about four feet deep

Harrison County authorities said a Purvis man is dead after he reportedly dove into shallow water off the Lighthouse Pier in Biloxi. Officials said 52-year old Matthew Blackburn died from a neck injury after diving off the pier on Feb. 26.

Authorities said Blackburn, who dove head first into the water, may not have known the water was only about three to four feet deep. Witnesses told police Blackburn climbed the railing and dove in.

He was pronounced dead at Biloxi Regional Medical Center.

Harlow’s hotel damaged in storm

Harlow’s Casino and Resort in Washington County sustained major damages Thursday as severe thunderstorms moved across the state. Hotel officials reported that most of the damage was limited to one side of the hotel’s roof, but a large portion of the building’s interior had serious water damage.

While the hotel had the most significant damage, the casino remained opened.

Several cars in the parking lot were also damaged including two Cadillacs that were totaled after being hit with debris.

Couple robbed; woman’s gun taken

Clarksdale police are looking for two black males that allegedly robbed a couple stealing the woman’s purse with a handgun inside. Captain Robbie Linley said the couple was in the 300 block of Delta Street about 11 p.m., when they were approached by the two suspects. The suspects took the purse by force before the woman’s companion pulled a gun and began firing at the suspects.

Linley said the men were not injured but ran away from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Juvenile stages house invasion; charged

A 13-year old Ocean Springs resident was charged with cruelty to animals and making a false police report after authorities said the teen called police claiming two men broke into his home and assaulted him and his dog. Authorities said police responded to the home on Heritage Lane and observed the teen with minor injuries and his dog bleeding from the head.

The teen was treated at Ocean Springs Hospital and released while the dog was taken to a local veterinarian where it was treated and held for observation.

During their investigation, police determined that the crime was staged and that the teen’s wounds were self-inflicted. The teen was also charged with harassing communications not related to this incident.

He was transported to the Jackson County Youth Detention Facility.
