Man found competent to stand trial for killing Jackson nurse

JACKSON – A man accused of stabbing a Jackson nurse 17 times before robbing her and stealing her car, in 2008, will stand trial for her murder. After undergoing a mental evaluation, William Roy Jones, Jr., was found competent to stand trial for killing 50-year old Juliet Lilly.

Jones admitted to repeatedly slashing Lilly’s throat in her home on Mulberry Drive in Jackson. His trial has been set for April 11, 2011.

In July, it took a jury about an hour to find Jones’ accomplice, Darrell Walker, guilty of accessory after the fact. Walker, 42, was found guilty of auto theft and will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Authorities said Jones made a taped confession to Lilly’s murder stating that he broke into her home and she walked in on him. Lilly’s home had been broken into several times.

Jones said he stole a computer, a TV/radio combination, and a small bag of change after murdering Lilly, and then drove away in her in 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage.

Jones managed to drive the car in first gear from Lilly’s home to Walker’s apartment, where he asked Walker to drive the car because he couldn’t drive a stick shift.

Authorities said Walker drove the car to Ethel Park, a few blocks from Lilly’s home, and parked it behind the Apple Ridge Shopping Center.

Walker then asked Jones if he had “killed somebody,” because his clothes were covered in blood. Authorities said Jones’ basically told Walker “to mind his own business.”

Both Jones and Walker have a long history of both felony and misdemeanor arrests.
