Bond is a quarter million dollars

A 24-year old Harrison County man already on probation for a prior drive by shooting has again been arrested for shooting into a moving vehicle. DeCarlos Holloway was arrested on Aug. 3 following an incident that occurred on July 21. Gulfport Police said an unnamed victim was driving north on 30th Avenue when Holloway allegedly drove up beside his vehicle and fired a single shot at him.

The round struck the victim and he went to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

Holloway‘s bond was set at $250,000.

Boliver County woman hit by 18-wheeler

A 51-year old woman was killed when authorities said she attempted to cross a highway and instead pulled in front of an 18-wheeler. Debra Ann Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision on Highway 61 in Bolivar County. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said Coleman was driving a 1999 Mercury Cougar when she tried to cross 61.

Authorities said the truck driver tried to avoid Coleman’s car by swerving into a field, but he still made contact with her vehicle.

Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene and the truck driver was transported to Boliver Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Mississippi State gets $142,000 in development funds

Congressman Bennie Thompson said The United States Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded an investment award to Mississippi State University in the amount of $142,880.

Thompson said the EDA funds the third year of a three-year University Center program at Mississippi State University. The program provides technical assistance, research and development tools to increase productivity, spur innovation, and promote entrepreneurship to help increase long-term regional competitiveness and economic diversification.

EDA’s University Center program is a competitively-based partnership between the EDA and academic institutions that makes the varied and vast resources of universities available to the economic development practitioner community.

Man charged with stealing car from hotel

A 21-year old Gulfport man was charged with vehicle burglary for allegedly stealing a car from the parking lot of a hotel. Charlane Hodge was arrested after a hotel patron at the Hampton Inn, located on Highway 49, reported their vehicle missing. A hotel employee called police and Hodge was located in the immediate area. He was taken into custody.

During their investigation of Hodge and that burglary, police also uncovered at least three additional vehicle burglaries, which they were also able to link to Hodge.

Hodge was charged and his bond was set at $20,000.

Ruleville man injured in hit and run accident

Sunflower authorities are looking for the driver that hit a man behind a local convenience store and left the scene. WABG reported that on July 9, around 12:45 a.m., Grant Lewis was hit by what witnesses described as a gray or silver Chevrolet Silverado in the parking lot of Double Quick on Highways 49 and 8.

Lewis was transferred to UMC in Jackson where he was listed in stable condition.

WABG said there were several eyewitnesses to the hit and run and they were able to give police the direction the suspect traveled in after the incident.

Two men try to cash fake checks at bank

Gulfport police arrested two men after they allegedly tried to cash counterfeit checks at a Harrison County bank. Paul Collins, 56, and 44-year old Gary Laborde were each charged with one count of uttering forgery. Authorities said the arrests stem from a complaint initiated on July 19 from Bancorp South in the 2300 block of 13th Street.

The investigation revealed that Collins and Laborde allegedly entered the bank and attempted to cash the checks totaling $500 each.

Collins and Laborde were taken into custody and they have yet to appear in court.
