JACKSON – A second suspect has been arrested and charged with killing two people during a home invasion last month. Frederick Champion, 26, was arrested Oct. 14 in Crystal Springs with the assistance of U.S. Marshals. Champion and 16-year-old Zachary Smith allegedly murdered Terrance James and Brandon Williams while attempting to rob at a residence in Jackson on Sept. 25.
Smith, a Jackson high school student, who was 15 at the time of the murders, was arrested on Oct. 11. He has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond.
Champion was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Jackson Police Officer Colendua Green said officers responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Meadow Lane Road on Sept. 25 about 8:41 p.m. When they arrived, they found James, 32, and Williams 27, dead from gunshot wounds.
Reportedly, James was the homeowner and Champion and Smith broke into the residence.
James was shot three times in the face and once in the chest and Williams was shot once in the chest. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said different weapons were used in the murders.
James’ wife was reportedly home at the time but was not injured.
“She is the one who called 911 during that incident,” Green said. “We were able to respond accordingly.”
Green said the matter remains under investigation and Champion is also facing capital murder charges.
