Madison Co. Heads To Court To Avert Bus Driver Strike

A hearing is scheduled for Monday in Madison County in an effort to avert a strike by school bus drivers, Madison County Schools Superintendent Mike Kent said.

t have threatened to go on strike, company officials said. In a statement sent to 16 WAPT News, Teamsters Local 891, which represents the bus drivers, accused First Student of underpaying bus drivers and not bargaining in good faith. First Student also sent a statement saying negotiations have completely broken down. First Student and the Teamsters are battling over a salary increase for drivers.The teamsters say drivers in central Mississippi are paid much less than drivers who work for First Student in neighboring states.On Wednesday, Madison County School officials worked out a deal to keep buses running in the district through the end of last week. The court hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Madison County Chancery Court.The school buses were running in Madison County Monday morning. About 7,000 Madison County students ride the bus to and from school, officials said.
