Laurel man’s conviction in girl’s slaying upheld by Appeals Court

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The state Court of Appeals has upheld the 2007 conviction of Desmond Keys in the death of 5-year-old Mariyanna Tucker.

Keys was sentenced to life in prison in Jones County for the 2006 killing.

Prosecutors say Keys fired more than three dozen rounds from an assault rifle into an apartment at Lone Oak Apartments in Laurel where the child lived with her family. The child died of gunshot wounds as she slept in the apartment.

Keys contends that evidence supported a manslaughter conviction, but the jury wasn’t allowed to consider it.

The Appeals Court said Tuesday that the evidence showed Keys acted with deliberate intent to cause harm to those inside the apartment and the jury verdict would not be overturned.
