Jackson, MS—A federal jury is expected to watch a taped confession Friday from a man accused of shooting a Jackson police officer.

Antonio Turner is accused of shooting Officer DeWayne Collier three times on July 7, 2008. Turner is charged with robbery, carjacking and brandishing a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Collier was shot while he was trying to arrest Turner and Cornelius Black, who were wanted in connection with a robbery.

Investigators said that the men had held up a payday loan business and that Collier spotted them driving through Jackson and chased them.

Turner is accused of shooting Collier in the head and abdomen before the men allegedly stole his patrol car.

The court proceedings adjourned at about 10 a.m. Friday after defense attorneys objected to portions of Turner’s taped confession being played. The trial, which began Wednesday, resumed at 11 a.m.

On Thursday, Black testified that Turner yelled that he did not want to go back to prison and then fired several shots after Collier ordered him to freeze. Black said that the two had robbed two businesses and then Collier got behind them and began a chase.

Black has pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Collier has undergone several surgeries and rehabilitation for his injuries. Collier was honored in May during a ceremony to honor 13 Jackson police officers killed in the line of duty. Collier said then that he hopes to return one day to the police force.

If convicted of all the charges, Turner could be sentenced to 65 years in prison.
