JACKSON – A Jackson State University security guard was found dead on a city street early Saturday morning, authorities said he’d been shot to death.
WLBT-TV reports 27-year-old Joseph Welch was shot five times, according to officials. Jackson police said Welch failed to show up for work at 10 p.m. Friday night.
“We got a shots fired call early this morning around 1:45 in this area,” said police spokeswoman Officer Colendula Green.
Welch was found dead along West Capitol Street near the intersection of Kolb Street, according to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart. A group of officers joined Stewart to examine the body.
Stewart said Welch was shot several times in the arm, leg, torso and head.
Stewart believes Welch was dead for at least 10 hours before his body was discovered.
Nothing was found at that time of the shots fired call, Green said. But nearby residents spotted the body when the sun came up, and called police again.
