Investigation closed on accident that killed 5

MOSELLE – Authorities said the investigation of an accident that killed five people, including three children, in Moselle last month has been closed. Corporal Todd Miller, of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said around 3 p.m., on Sunday, May 15, 27-year old Joanna Millam was driving a Chevy Suburban on Highway 11 in Moselle. Miller said Millam attempted to pass another vehicle on the roadway when she hit the car in the process.

“It’s a rural two-lane highway,” Miller said. “And they made contact as they were passing,” Miller said. “The suburban went off the roadway, overturned several times, hit a utility pole, a guard rail and went down into a creek.”

Millam and her five passengers, 26-year old Bruce Myrick, his wife, Janet, 27, 5-year old Haley Sumrall, 7-year old Timothy Millam and 6-year old Tommy Myrick were all thrown from vehicle.

Millam, Bruce Myrick, Sumrall, Timothy Millam and Tommy Myrick were all pronounced dead at the scene. Janet Myrick was taken to Forest General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Miller said everyone in the suburban were related and lived a short distance away from where the accident occurred.

The driver of the car Milam hit was not injured.

“She was from Petal which was about five miles from the scene,” Miller said. “She was alone in her vehicle and she wasn’t injured, but she was badly shaken.”

Miller said witnesses to the accident and the investigation confirmed that Millam hit the car as she tried to pass. Miller also said none of the victims appeared to be wearing seat belts.
