Husband kills wife then shoots himself

JACKSON – A UMC Hospital employee is dead after authorities said her husband killed her and then shot himself in an attempted murder-suicide. Authorities said a family member found 45-year old Sharon Kelly in the bedroom of her home on Valley Ridge Drive, in Jackson, with a gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Louis Kelly, 56, was also found in the home with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officials said the domestic incident happened on Feb. 24 around 8:30 a.m. Jackson police were called to the home after Kelly’s brother heard a gunshot while standing outside. Alonzo Kelly told authorities his brother called him that morning after he shot his wife.

“I told him I wasn’t going to watch him kill himself,” Alonzo Kelly told The Clarion-Ledger.

Alonzo told authorities the couple had been married for at least four years and their relationship had been volatile.

“He couldn’t take it anymore and snapped,” Alonzo said.

Police recovered two handguns from the scene.

Sharon Kelly, a nursing assistant at UMC, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hinds County Coroner. Louis was reportedly a telephone operator at the G.V. Montgomery Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, in Jackson, and he was transported to UMC in serious condition.

Local news reports said Sharon’s teenage son lived with the couple and that she also has an older child from a prior relationship.

The incident remains under investigation.
