Head start program gets $13.4 million grant

JACKSON – Congressman Bennie Thompson said The United States Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $13,436,860 discretionary grant to Mississippi Action For Progress, Inc. (MAP), for their Head Start Programs project.

MAP is a comprehensive, community-based child development and family services program primarily for preschool children of low income families.

MAP operates four basic child development programs: Part Year/Part Day Center-based Model for children 3 and 4-years of age; Home Based Model for children 3 and 4-years of age; Early Head Start for infants, toddlers and pregnant women and a Full Year/Full Day Center-based Model for children 3 and 4-years of age.

MAP serves more than 4,700 children in the 3 to 4-year age group, 75 infants and toddlers and currently about 15 pregnant women.

Map employs more than 1,200 people that service their 39 Head Start Centers and one Early Head Start Center.

MAP has offices in several counties including Neshoba, Lauderdale, Scott and Winston, and their central office is strategically located in the capitol city of Jackson which organizers said allows for easy access to opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with varied governmental agencies, social programs and other civic organizations.

MAP also boasts several successful projects: a Mobile Dental Unit, a Mobile Medical Unit and a Child Progress Indicator and a Medicaid Clinic. The Medicaid Screening Clinic opened in 1997 and promotes healthier living, personal fitness and health wellness concepts among residents.
