Charged with holding up Vicksburg citizens

Four Vicksburg teens accused of robbing pedestrians at gunpoint last spring were arraigned in circuit court after being indicted by the Warren County Grand Jury.

Eighteen-year old Blake Reed, 17-year-old Deshawn Williams, 17-year-old Jacory Wright and 17-year-old Conti Tillis, face multiple counts of armed robbery in as many as five separate instances in May 2009, WLBT reported.

Williams also faces one count of strong-armed robbery from an incident on May 11th.

A fifth teen, 19-year-old Sha’Kayla Caples, was given immunity from prosecution as long as she testifies against the others in court. WLBT reported that Caples was a stand-out on the Warren Central High School girls’ basketball team for four years.

Clarksdale School Board votes to close school

Coahoma County will soon lose their highest performing school in the district. Sherard Elementary near U.S. Highway 1 and Route 322 was designated to close in a vote of 3-to-2.

The school board met last month and added the matter to the agenda without any public comment or discussion leaving parents unclear as to why the school is closing. Sherard currently has less than 250 students and 30 teachers, local news reports said.

State representatives have been contacted by concerned parents about the matter.

Weapons missing at Sunflower Police Department

Police in Sunflower are looking for several weapons that disappeared from their department.

Authorities said during a routine inventory inspection, four pistols and a shot gun were missing. Officials are not clear if the weapons were lost or stolen. But the matter has been turned over to the state attorney general’s office.
