Indian burial ground discovered

Archeologist have found what they believe to be an Indian burial ground near U.S. Highway 61 in Rolling Fork. Workers uncovered the site while working at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Educational Center.

The land, which sits on about 33 acres, was purchased by the Corps, near the iconic Red Barn, from the family of Bernard Deaton. Authorities said the Deatons owned the land for about 100 years.

During an excavation of the site, an archeological team found stone tools, pottery and preserved remains which date back possibly to the 1300s.

Construction of the multi-million dollar project has been halted while the site is being examined.
