Inmate convicted of grand larceny

An inmate who escaped from the Greenwood Restitution Center nearly a week ago was captured late Sunday afternoon by deputies in Carroll County. Forty-year old Frederick Turlich was apprehended about 4:15 p.m., Aug. 7, on Highway 7 near the Avalon community.

Turlich was first discovered missing on Aug. 2, during the 5 p.m. count at the restitution center.

Turlich was serving a nine-year sentence for a grand larceny conviction in Marion County and will now face an additional five years if he is convicted of escape.

After being taken into custody, Turlich was transported to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl.

Man sells stolen car

A 20-year old man has been charged with felony taking of a motor vehicle after authorities said he stole a vehicle and then sold it. Charles Edward Wilson was arrested at his home in the 1600 block of Wyndote Road, in Gautier, on Aug. 4 after an incident on July 6.

On July 6, a report was filed with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in reference to the theft of a 1971 Chevy pick-up truck. The truck was stolen from an address on Manchester Drive in the Escatawpa Community in Jackson County.

The truck was recovered two days later at a location on Elder Street in Moss Point, detectives learned the truck had been sold to an individual.

Wilson was arrested and charged with the crime and his bond was set at $5,000.

Bank robbery suspect found in Louisiana

One day after Gulport police said a man robbed a local bank and ran away on foot, he was located in Louisiana and was taken into custody. Authorities said on Aug. 2, around 3:48 p.m., Markis White entered Whitney Bank on Courthouse Road and demanded cash.

White pulled a weapon and reportedly left with an undisclosed amount of cash. At the time, White’s identity was unknown and police had only his description as seen on the surveillance video. He was described as 18-20 years old and wearing a blue shirt, blue pants, a Hardees hat and white and black shoes.

On Aug. 3, White was spotted in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana and taken into custody. He is currently awaiting extradition to Mississippi.

Niece of author William Faulkner, dies in Mississippi

Dean Faulkner Wells, the niece of author William Faulkner, died at a Mississippi hospital from complications of a stroke. She was 75. Her husband, Larry Wells, says his wife suffered a stroke in late July and had been hospitalized in Oxford, where she died. Graveside services were held at Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

Faulkner Wells was born in 1936, four months after her father, Dean Swift Faulkner, William Faulkner’s youngest brother, died in a plane crash. William Faulkner, who she called Pappy, became her legal guardian. Faulkner Wells worked on the renovation of Rowan Oak, the last home of William Faulkner who died in Oxford in 1962.

Faulkner Wells also co-founded the Faux Faulkner parody contest.

Disadvantaged students get grant awards

Congressman Bennie Thompson said The United States Department of Health and Human Services awarded discretionary grants to several Mississippi universities to provide scholarships for disadvantages students and the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship.

Each of the awards were for universities in the Second Congressional District:

Jackson State will receive $802,334 for scholarships; Delta State will receive $117,586 for scholarships; Delta State will also receive $23,072 for Advanced Education; University of Mississippi Medical will receive $109,864 for scholarships; University of Mississippi Medical will also receive $46,195 for Advanced Education.
