Deputy indicted for allowing dog to attack suspect

OXFORD – A Choctaw County Sheriff’s Deputy has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly allowing his police dog to attack a black man from Mathiston and then falsifying a report to cover up the incident. Billy Charles Scott, Jr., was indicted on civil rights violations and obstruction of justice for an incident that occurred on April 1, 2010.

According to the indictment, Scott ordered his police dog to attack William “Donte” Dubose and Dubose was subsequently bitten several times by the dog. The indictment states that Scott released the dog “without any legitimate law enforcement purpose causing the victim to suffer bodily injury.”

The indictment further charges that Scott “failed to keep the victim safe and later falsified a report in an effort to cover up his misconduct.”

A federal grand jury returned an indictment last week against Scott and he appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Jerry Davis, in Aberdeen, on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Scott was released on a $25,000 bond and he will face trial on March 28 before United States District Judge Sharion Aycock.

If convicted, Scott faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison for the civil rights offenses and 20 years in prison for the false statements offense.
