Convicted felon arrested for armed robbery

LEXINGTON – A convicted felon who walked away from a supervised work detail and allegedly robbed a Lexington store at gunpoint, has been returned to jail.

Kevin Cortez Young, of Tchula, was transported to Rankin County, after Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said Young and three other men, also from Tchula, allegedly robbed Bell’s Grocery Store late last month.

According to March, on Friday, Sept. 25, a clerk from Bell’s Grocery Store, on U.S. Highway 49, told authorities that three men came into the store with a gun and demanded money. March said the clerk gave them about $2,000 and they left the premises in a white Buick.

“We contacted deputies from Humphreys County and Yazoo County and asked them to block all the major highways,” March said, “because we knew they would be coming into their counties and we wanted all the roads covered.”

March said when the suspect’s vehicle approached the road block, it turned around and the suspects began tossing items from the car.

“You wouldn’t believe what they were throwing out,” March said. “T-shirts and the band holders from the money they took. And when the deputies found the bands, it had the bank’s name stamped on it and we knew these were the suspects.”

March said after a short pursuit on the highway, the suspects lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. All four suspects ran into the woods and were eventually captured without incident. Arrested was Young, 24, Sharod Wilson, 25, Yakebau Head, 18, and Frank Hogan, 19.

Young, who according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiracy, was taken to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. Young was on probation at the time of the robbery after being convicted of conspiracy in 2003. He was on earned release supervision and working for Mississippi Prison Industries when he “walked off his work detail,” on Aug. 3, 2009, said Suzanne Singletary of MDOC. A warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Wilson, who has a prior burglary conviction is being held without bond in Holmes County. March said that Head and Hogan have no prior convictions, and that they are being held pending the investigation and a court date.
