A local chiropractor has been arrested and charged with insurance fraud, the attorney general’s office said. Dr. James Donovan, 63, turned himself in to police after he was indicted by the Lowndes County Grand Jury.

Donovan, of the Donavan Chiropractic Clinic, was charged with four counts of insurance fraud.

The indictment alleges that Donovan made false or fraudulent claims on the insurance policies of four patients totaling more than $3,500. The crimes are alleged to have occurred between Jan. 1, 2007 and March 23, 2008.

Donovan has since bonded out of jail. If he is convicted, he faces up to 12 years in jail and a $20,000 fine along with reimbursement expenses.

Argument leads to high speed chase

A Leland man was arrested after leading police on a high speed chase with two small children in the car. Johnny Smith was charged with three felonies and nine misdemeanors after police said he took the car keys from his girlfriend and drove off in her car.

Authorities said the incident began when Smith and his girlfriend had an argument. The girlfriend allegedly went to a gas station to call police and Smith followed her inside to confront her. Police said that’s when Smith took her car keys, got in her car and drove off with the two children in the car.

Police caught up with Smith on Third Street, but not before he led them on a chase, allegedly going as fast as 60 miles per hour in a residential neighborhood.  The chase reportedly lasted about four minutes when Smith jumped out of the car on Leland Street and ran away.

Officers found him in a residence on Sinclair Street. He was arrested and his bond was set at $30,000.
