Owner was thrown from the hood

A Coahoma County man accused of carjacking a woman in Greenville last week has been arrested in Leflore County, WABG reported. Tracy Brandon, of Friar’s Point, was arrested and charged with grand larceny after authorities said he allegedly stole a car belonging to Cara Stevens.

Authorities said Brandon has a prior criminal history, and he may also be charged with aggravated assault.

WABG reported that Stevens was driving her 2007 white Nissan Sentra when Brandon forcibly took her car. Stevens reportedly jumped on the hood of the car as Brandon drove away, but she was thrown off about a mile down the road.

Stevens reportedly was not seriously injured and the car was later recovered near the Doddsville and Slaughter area, WABG said.

The case remains under investigation.

Explosion at chemical plant leads to evacuation

Officials said that a fire at a local plant which resulted in a small explosion, led to the evacuation of residents in a Greenville neighborhood last week. Firefighters responded to the blaze at Platte Chemicals on Raceway Road, on Wednesday, March 10.

Platte Chemicals develops insecticides, herbicides and fungicides for agricultural use, local news reports said.

More than 23 firefighters were on the scene to battle the blaze.

After firefighters had the blaze under control, a small explosion occurred on the grounds of the plant.

Since officials were initially unclear as to what type of chemicals contributed to the fire, authorities evacuated the nearby neighborhood and closed several roads as a precaution.

Residents were allowed to go back to their homes within the hour.

The fire remains under investigation.
