Byram becomes a city

The town of Byram finally became an official city Monday, June 22. The road to becoming a city was met with much resistance from the City of Jackson.

That same day Nick Tremonte was sworn in as the new mayor of Byram. Kent Alday, Amy Douglas, D.L. Ford, Theresa Marble, and Richard White were sworn in as Byram’s five aldermen.

Tremonte and the aldermen were presented with certificates to show their governing positions. Tremonte was also presented with the flag of Mississippi.

“We finally got it done,” Tremonte said during the ceremony. “The first step,” he said, “is to meet Thursday night” to get a plan for the new city. “We’re going to start at the top and work our way down.”
