Authorities said a Chickasaw County man, who was reportedly a firefighter with the Thorn Volunteer Fire Department, was killed after a gun discharged while he was hunting with friends. Alford and his friends were hunting wild hogs on land owned by the U. S. Corps of Engineers when they were returning with the animal. Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Mac Gore told the Chickasaw Journal the group was packing up to leave when the fatal accident occurred.

“They were finishing up their hunt and had come back to the boat dock and they were putting things up,” said Gore. “The gun fell from its holster and apparently landed on the hammer. It was an older model .357-cal. pistol and discharged when it hit the ground. We interviewed about a half-dozen people and we feel like our investigation is complete at this point. It was a tragic accident.”
