JSU students comment on the merger and on Mason’s proposal

The merger between Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, and Mississippi Valley State University has been an issue among many students. Some students from Jackson State wanted to share their opinion on the merger and how it appears that President Ronald Mason Jr. is a supporter.

“I chose Jackson State, and Jackson State chose me. This proposal has been thought out for quite sometime and the fact Mason sat in front of the student body and lied to all of us about his support against this when he really is plotting against us and our dear old college home.” Said Symone Davis, a sophomore, 19, from Gary, Ind. majoring in Broadcast production.

Kennitra Thompson a Mass Communications major, Sphomore, 20, from Jackson, Miss. said “He’s (Ronald Mason Jr.) supposed to have an engraving in JSU. He has no tradition, he should be proud of the university. Why merge with two other financially weak schools. Governor Barbour may want to wipe out the HBCU’s in Mississippi.”

“Mason should try to come up with another alternative to get money. We will lose money if we don’t merge, so he should find other ways to get money without the merger.” Deneisha Pearson, sophomore, 20, from Forest, MS. Mass Communications major.

“Attending Jackson State University, I came solely on the tradition and richness of its history. I don’t have any family who has come from the university and my love and admiration for the university itself has grown. For the schools to merge, I feel that it is taking away essence of Jackson State. It doesn’t make sense for the president to support something students feel so strongly against. A president should be more concerned about saving the history as opposed to financial gain. “Says Monica Atkins, a junior, 20, majoring in English; Journalism from Chicago, IL.

“The merger is messed up. Students may have to go to a different school for class, like they may have to go to Alcorn to take classes. It’s just not smart. I don’t understand why he would support something like that. Mason is affecting other people’s lives, he should stop being selfish. He should have asked us (students) first about the merger,” said Ayo Beckley, 19, from Oakland, CA. majoring in Mass Communications says.
