Preschoolers offered free summer meal program

For as long as many can remember, the Petal and Hattiesburg school districts have provided free meals during the summers for children 18 years and younger, and this summer is no exception.

The districts are just a few of the more than 150 feeding sites across the state offering free breakfast and lunch to children up to 18 during the summer.

Last year was the first year free dinner was offered by a location in the Petal School District. This year, free dinner will be offered again at Petal Upper Elementary School.

Danny Dillistone, child nutrition director for Petal School District, said Petal has been serving free meals with the Summer Food Service Program for more than 11 years. […]

Agents: Central Miss. housing market improving

The housing market is looking up in central Mississippi. Prices are higher and sales faster than they were a year ago, The Clarion-Ledger reported.

People finally seem convinced they’ve survived the worst of the recession and can again make big-ticket purchases, said Dorothy Thompson, board president of the Jackson Association of Realtors, which covers Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Copiah, Yazoo, Simpson and Scott counties.

Moss Point woman charged in hit and run death of husband

Gautier police have charged a Moss Point woman in the death of a Pascagoula man – her husband. Witnesses told police they saw 25-year-old Krystal Kersey intentionally strike 24-year-old Justin Gary Stork with her vehicle.

Stork’s body was found in a grassy area near River Bend Apartments in Gautier on Saturday, June 8.

Police Capt. Jerry Cooksey said Stork was walking between two apartment building when he was struck by a blue car. Stork was not reported to be running from Kersey.

“Witnesses said he was just standing out there,” Cooksey said. […]

2 workers killed after falling from cell phone tower

Federal and local investigators are trying to determine the cause of an accident in which two workers fell to their deaths from a cellphone tower in Copiah County.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon at a tower on Mississippi Highway 27 north of Highway 28 in Georgetown

The Copiah County coroner says the men were climbing up the 300-foot tower and were about halfway up when they fell.

Randle Drane, of the Copiah County Emergency Management Agency, said the men worked for a Louisiana company. […]

Harrison grand jury to consider fatal beating case

A south Mississippi judge has declined to reduce the $1 million bond for each of the three people charged in the fatal assault of a Harrison County man.

A grand jury will consider the cases against Stevie Creon Ambrose, 27; his brother Abdur “Rahim” Ambrose, 28; and Orlander P. Dedeaux II, 19.

The three are charged with murder. But, Harrison County prosecutor Herman Cox said grand jurors might upgrade that to capital murder with an underlying charge of kidnapping.

Authorities said Robert Norbert Trosclair, 31, died April 10, several days after being kicked, punched, hog-tied, stabbed, strangled and hit on the head with a garden-hose reel and a tire and rim. The attack occurred in Pass Christian. […]

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will show Mississippians at several events an up-close look at the tragic consequences that can occur when persons choose to drive or travel while impaired, distracted, or without buckling up.

First black judge of Miss. to speak at Alcorn diversity event

In 1963, Constance Slaughter-Harvey enrolled in Tougaloo College. There she met civil rights leader Medgar Evers shortly before he was assassinated. His brutal death inspired her to get involved in the civil rights movement and help bring about changes in Mississippi.

After graduating cum laude from Tougaloo College with a degree in Political Science and Economics, Slaughter-Harvey continued her fight for social equality while attending law school at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and persevered to become the first black woman to receive a law degree from that institution in 1970. She later became the first black judge in the state of Mississippi.

As a trailblazer, Slaughter-Harvey will speak on a panel of “phenomenal female firsts in Mississippi at Alcorn State University on Monday, April 22. […]

Deadbeat dad sentenced for failing to pay child support

A Madison County man has answered in court for his failing to pay child support, Attorney General Jim Hood said.
 
James Coy Fendley, 41, pleaded guilty and was sentenced for Felony Non-Support of a child before Madison County Circuit Court Judge John Emfinger.
 
Judge Emfinger sentenced Fendley to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), with five years suspended and post release supervision in the custody of MDOC.

Senator Hillman Frazier speaks at Lester Elementary School

Several local politicians and dignitaries attended the 15th annual Black History month program at Lester Elementary School on Valentine’s Day. Jackson Public School Superintendent Cedrick Gray was also in attendance.

Senator Hillman Frazier, guest speaker for the morning event, said “I have never seen so many politicians in one setting at one time – when it was not about running for office.”…. […]
