Grammy Museum groundbreaking at Delta State

– A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Grammy Museum was held at Delta State’s Derrall Foreman Golf Course near Highway 8 in Cleveland on Tuesday, June 11.

The event was organized by Cleveland Music Foundation.

Gov. Phil Bryant presented a check for $2 million to the project. Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and Sen. Willie Simmons were scheduled to speak. Deputy Director of Grammy Museum at L.A. Live in Los Angeles Rita George was also scheduled to address the crowd. […]

Coroner: Police kill gunman at Lexington church

Police fatally shot the son of a church deacon Sunday morning after they were called to a church when members of the congregation started arguing over the firing of a pastor, authorities said.

Cacedrick White, 26, arrived with a shotgun and fired it once in the parking lot while police were at the church in Lexington, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said. A Lexington police officer fired back three times, wounding White. He died at a hospital.

Water hydrant locations going on GPS

Fire departments in Saltillo and Tupelo are logging each of their cities’ fire hydrants’ coordinates on a GPS, WJTV reported.
   
Officials tell the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that will let a captain pull up a burning building’s address on a computer while heading to a fire, and locate all of the nearby hydrants.
   
The firefighters can then plan for running lines and getting water on the fire. […]

MDOT and partners dedicate Habitat home in Jackson

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) recently held a dedication ceremony for a Habitat for Humanity project in which employees from both agencies volunteered hours of their time to help construct a beautiful 1,200 square foot home for Pedro and Shawn Galloway.
 
The ceremony was held Monday, June 17, in front of the Habitat home, located on Englewood Street in Jackson. Suspect charged in Columbus fatal shooting

A 30-year-old West Point man has been charged with murder after authorities say he fled the scene of a Sunday shooting.

WTVA-TV reports Columbus police initially responded to a vehicle accident just before 3:30 a.m. on June 9.

Upon arriving at the 1600 block of Highway 45 North, officers found 47-year-old John Easley in the passenger seat of a car with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. […]

June 13, 2013, will forever be written in history as a day when the life and legacy of American hero and Alcorn alum Medgar Wiley Evers ’52 was honored by dedicating a heroic size statue on the campus of his alma mater. Hundreds gathered for the memorial dedication ceremony to witness the historic event.

Preacher charged with sexual battery

Authorities have charged an Alcorn County preacher with sexual battery. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department told WTVA that Timothy D. Nall, 57, has been charged based on a grand jury indictment.

Child killed in two-vehicle accident

A two-vehicle accident at the Highway 18 and Springridge Road intersection Saturday, resulted in at least one death, WLBT reported.

A one-year-old died in the accident, according to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart. Corp. Otis Easterling with MHP, identified the child as Christopher Salas. The child was in a car seat.

MDOC responds to federal lawsuit

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is working with Management & Training Corp. (MTC) and Health Assurance to respond to a federal lawsuit filed recently over alleged conditions at East Mississippi Correctional Facility (EMCF) near Meridian in Lauderdale County.  

It is the agency’s policy to let the facts play out in court, prison officials said.

However, the allegations made against MDOC officials are unfairly damaging to its commitment to provide efficient and effective offender custody, care, control and treatment consistent with sound correctional principles and constitutional practices, MDOC spokesman Grace Fisher said. […]
