MCCOMB, Mississippi (AP) — McComb Police Chief Greg Martin says a Brookhaven police officer, who was arrested in connection with a murder in Pike County Monday, had been fired by his department prior to his hiring in Brookhaven.

Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell told The Daily Leader the arrest of the now former officer Jasper Cortez Pittman came as a shock to him. Pittman was arrested by Pike County authorities in the murder of 53-year-old Kenneth Thompson…. […]

Jackson police officer hit by car on I-55

Police Chief Lindsey Horton has confirmed the death of a Jackson Police Officer, his first since being named to his new post earlier this month. Horton said 35-year Bruce Jacob was killed Saturday afternoon after being hit by a motorist in the southbound lanes of I-55 and Northside Drive.

Jacob, a Precinct Four officer, and a five year veteran of the police force, received a call about debris on the roadway of I-55 south about 1:30 p.m. He had reportedly retrieved a barbecue grill that had fallen off a truck and was putting it in the trunk of his cruiser when another vehicle came from behind and hit him.

Jacob was taken to UMC where he died of multiple blunt-force trauma, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said.

Former officers sentenced for stealing govt. funds

Two former law enforcement officers were sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee for theft of government funds and property.

Zach Robinson, a former deputy with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, and Kent Daniels, a former Jackson Police officer and investigator for the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office, were each sentenced to 12 months in federal prison.

They were also ordered to pay joint restitution in the amount of $21,996. […]

DOJ to launch hate crime inquiry in case of George Zimmerman

Although he is said to be in hiding after his acquittal in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, trouble for George Zimmerman appears to be far from over.

The Justice Department said Sunday that it was restarting its investigation into Martin’s death in 2012 to consider possible separate hate crime charges against Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot Martin was acquitted of all charges by a jury late Saturday. […]

Manning granted stay of execution due to ‘flawed’ hair analysis

A death row inmate convicted of killing two college students in December 1992 has been issued a stay of execution after his attorneys raised doubts as to what they call ‘new evidence.’

Willie Jerome “Fly” Manning had been scheduled to die by lethal injection on Tuesday, May 7 at 6 p.m. But just before 2 p.m., Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner (MDOC) Christopher Epps told a room of people waiting to witness the execution that Manning had been granted a stay by the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Manning was convicted for the brutal murders of Mississippi State University Students Tiffany Miller and Jon Steckler in Oktibbeha County. […]

2 teenagers die in Lee County traffic accident

Two teenagers died in a Sunday morning traffic accident in Lee County. Lee County Coroner Caroline Green identifies them as Gage Fidram, 17, and Jesse Witt, 17, both of Saltillo.

Sheriff Jim Johnson told WTVA that Witt was driving south on Busy Bottom Road when he left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Authorities say the accident occurred at approximately 4:38 a.m. It took more than an hour to extricate both individuals from the vehicle, Johnson says. […]

A few snow flakes possible for Wednesday morning

There’s no need for a shovel just yet. But meteorologists are saying a few snow flurries are possible for North Mississippi early Wednesday morning.

Keith Gibson, of WCBI weather, said the best chance to see an accumulation of at least a few inches of snow will be between Memphis and Clarksdale.

“Blizzard conditions are expected in eastern Arkansas and northwestern Tennessee, if you can believe that,” Gibson said. […]
