MSU raises more than $80 million for third consecutive year

For three consecutive years, Mississippi State University has raised more than $80 million in outright gifts and pledges of future support from individuals, corporations, foundations, trusts and estates, with the just-ended 2013 fiscal year exceeding $81.3 million

Previous record years included FY 2012, in which Mississippi State experienced its largest single giving year total in school history with over $86.4 million. More than $80.3 million was raised in FY 2011.

MSU wins grant to help students manage money

Mississippi State University is one of 15 schools nationwide to get a grant to help students with their finances.

The Council of Graduate Schools announced that it would give MSU $40,000 to pay for the program.

Associate Dean of the Graduate School Karen Coats says MSU will use the money to educate graduate students about financial literacy. Because students are borrowing more to pay for education, they may need help managing their personal finances and making decisions about saving, spending and borrowing. […]

Alcorn President, Myrlie Evers honored at 2013 HBCU Awards

Alcorn State University President M. Christopher Brown II continues to be recognized as a pioneer leader and Saturday, June 28, at the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy’s third annual HBCU Awards he captured the title of Male HBCU President of the Year.

Myrlie Evers-Williams, a distinguished scholar-in-residence at Alcorn, was honored as Female HBCU Faculty Member of the Year. She teaches social justice seminars, advises senior research papers, and interacts individually with students, encouraging them to succeed in their studies and passion for social justice and equality. Southern Miss Quintet Chosen for National Festival

The Southern Quintet, composed of students from The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music, has been accepted to attend the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival held at The Julliard School in New York City July 28 – Aug. 8.
 
The 11-day festival hosts advanced and professional musicians, ensembles and composers from all across the country and abroad to perform and be mentored by Imani Winds, a Grammy Award-nominated wind quintet known for their legacy of innovative music. The Southern Quintet is the first student chamber group from Southern Miss to be accepted to the festival.

King Earns Southern Miss 2012-2013 Staff Council Service Award

Sharon King, administrative assistant in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was named recipient of the Staff Council Service Award June 4 during the organization’s annual recognition luncheon.

King, a 2003 graduate of the university, began her career at Southern Miss in 2005 as administrative assistant to the development officer for the College of Science and Technology. She joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2007, where her duties include responsibility for tracking budget expenditures, inventory control, and graduate student records, among others.

2 more junior colleges announce tuition hikes

Two more Mississippi community colleges have announced tuition increases for the fall semester.

Northeast Mississippi Community College and Itawamba Community College announced its board of trustees approved the higher fees at meetings in April.

Earlier this month, Copiah-Lincoln Community College said tuition would be going up for the 2013-14 school year. The tuition for a fulltime student will increase $125 per semester to $1,100. […]

Case-Price Named New Director of Childrens Center at Southern Miss

Sarah Case-Price began her affiliation with The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi more than a dozen years ago as a student worker.

On July 1, she will take over the reins as director.

Case-Price has served in several capacities at the center since becoming a full-time staff member in 2006 – most recently as assistant director. She takes over for acting Director Cindy Bivins, who will continue to help with the center as a volunteer. […]

Tougaloo College plans civil rights commemorations

Tougaloo College is starting an 18-month commemoration of the civil rights movement, 50 years after the effort helped reshape the American political and social landscape.

The first event, a gala was Saturday night at the Jackson Convention Complex, honoring four people who founded organizations designed to help the poor or disenfranchised: Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center; Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund; Dr. H. Jack Geiger of Physicians for Human Rights; and Robert “Bob” Moses of The Algebra Project. Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Roberta Flack will perform.
