Bullet hits school bus, 1 student in Panola Co.

Panola County authorities said a bullet that struck a Panola County school bus, grazing a student in the back, may have been a hunting accident.

District Attorney John Champion said a 10-year-old male student was transported by helicopter on Jan. 25 to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis with non-life-threatening injuries.

Champion said the bullet went through a side window of the South Panola bus, which was carrying about 15 students when the incident occurred. Surveillance video onboard the bus captured the incident.

Pike County convict escapes from jail

An inmate serving seven years for a series of burglaries and identity theft walked away from the McComb facility where he was being held and remains at large, authorities said.

Richard Glen Maples, 22, reportedly left the Pike County Community Work Center around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night wearing his state-issued MDOC green and white striped pants and white MDOC shirt. His shirt has “MDOC Convict” printed on the back.

Prison officials are investigating how Maples escaped from facility and whether or not he had assistance. […]

Proud to be Mississippian, Evers-Williams says

Myrlie Evers-Williams says people praised her poise after her husband, Mississippi NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers, was assassinated 50 years ago in the state. But she says she struggled with wanting revenge.

Evers-Williams, 79, said at a prayer luncheon Thursday in Jackson that her faith helped her find peace, and her daughter once reminded her that Medgar Evers had taught people not to hate.

A knowing grin spread across Sean Tuohy’s face as he considered the uncanny connections between the hit film that changed his family’s life and the fact that Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Michael Oher played in and won his first Super Bowl in the Big Easy. (The Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31)

New Orleans is where Tuohy grew up and went to high school with author Michael Lewis, who wrote “The Blind Side.”

The book led to the movie, which depicted the Tuohys’ rewarding experience as Oher’s adoptive family. Actress Sandra Bullock, who starred as Sean Tuohy’s wife, Leigh Anne, owns a home in New Orleans. […]

1 dead after vast storm rakes South, Midwest

A large storm system packing high winds and rain caused some building damaged and knocked down trees and power lines in North Mississippi.
No injuries have been reported.

The death was reported when a large tree blew down on a shed in Nashville, Tenn., where a man was sheltering, police told Nashville broadcaster WTVF-TV.

Another person was reported injured by lightning in Arkansas during the storm’s eastward trek. Two people suffered minor injuries when a mobile home was blown off its foundation in Kentucky. A 23-year-old woman has been released on a $2,000 bond after she allegedly took money while working as a deputy clerk for the town of Brooksville.

Hostess sells Wonder bread to Tastykakes maker

Hostess has found a new home for its most popular breads, including the iconic Wonder bread.

The bankrupt maker of Twinkies, Devil Dogs and other snack cakes said this month that it selected bids by rival bakery Flower Foods Inc. to buy six of its bread brands for $390 million. Flower Foods, based in Thomasville, Ga., is best known for Tastykakes but also makes breads including Nature’s Own and Cobblestone Mill.
