Cemetery owner pleads guilty to state charges

Cemetery owner Wayne Hight of Booneville has been sentenced to four years in prison for failing to properly fund pre-need burial trusts.

The Daily Corinthian reported that Hight was also ordered to pay restitution of more than $500,000.

Assistant District Attorney Richard Bowen said the 74-year-old Hight pleaded guilty in Alcorn County Circuit Court to two counts of misapplying or converting pre-need funds at Oaklawn Memorial Park and two counts of the same charge at Forrest Memorial Park. […]

A Brandon Middle School teacher is on suspension after what school district officials are referring to as a “disciplinary issue.”

Angela Smith told The Clarion-Ledger her eighth grade son was shoved on March 19 by information and communication technology teacher Terry Williams after he was caught tossing a piece of candy across the room.

Smith said Williams told her son to go to the principal’s office. She said her son stopped at the water fountain on the way to the principal’s office, and the teacher came out and started yelling at him. The teacher then grabbed him by the shirt and bumped him with his chest. […]

Athletic director Ashley Robinson says unsafe playing conditions at Valley’s field in Itta Bena prompted the decision.

The pedestrian killed by an alleged hit-and-run driver in Biloxi over the weekend has been identified as 70-year-old David Honarka, of Greenback, Tenn.

The Sun Herald reported that Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove released his name Monday after locating his relatives.

Hargrove says Honarka would often visit Biloxi casinos while his wife was visiting with relatives. […]

Mississippi defensive end C.J. Johnson is out for the rest of spring practice after suffering a broken fibula in his right leg during Wednesday’s practice.

Johnson was expected to have surgery Thursday, according to school officials. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said Johnson’s recovery time is expected to be about three months.

Authorities said a police chief in east Mississippi was killed after being struck by a car while directing traffic Tuesday.

Clarke County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Barry White said Enterprise Police Chief Randy Boykin died while being flown to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson.

Boykin had been chief for 12 years and also worked as a part-time deputy. White said Boykin directed traffic at the main intersection in town every weekday morning to help with school traffic. […]

Judge approves Howard $1.3M lawsuit settlement

A federal judge has given final approval to a settlement by Howard Industries, a Laurel-based electric transformer company, to pay $1.3 million and hire at least 70 workers to end a class action lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed by four black women who accused the company of discrimination for allegedly hiring only Hispanic workers.

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett signed the order, finding the settlement “fair, reasonable and adequate.” […]

Olen Burrage, suspect in 1964 Klan slayings, dies

Olen Burrage, who was acquitted in the case of three civil rights workers killed by Ku Klux Klansmen in Mississippi in the 1960s, has died. He was 82.

Burrage died Friday March 8 at a hospital, the McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel said. The funeral home did not release a cause of death.

Burrage owned land in Neshoba County in central Mississippi where the three civil rights workers were buried under an earthen dam after members of the white supremacist KKK killed them in 1964. He said he knew nothing about the killings and was acquitted of conspiracy in 1967. […]
