GRENADA – Authorities in Grenada County are still investigating a domestic disturbance that left a 65-year old man dead.
On Friday, Aug. 21, Lester Booker was found dead in his apartment from several stab wounds to his upper body. His wife, Taunya Denise Booker, 58, has been arrested for his murder and bound over to the action of the grand jury.
Police said Booker and his wife, lived in separate apartments in Federation Towers, a residential complex for senior citizens, in Grenada. About 2 a.m., Friday morning, Russell Carver, Chief of Investigators, for the Grenada Police Department, said a neighbor called police and when they arrived, they found Booker lying across his bed with his feet still on the floor.
“The neighbor said he heard stuff falling and breaking and called police,”Carver said. “And when they arrived, the wife opened the door and they found Mr. Booker dead.”
Carver said Booker’s wife became an immediate suspect because the neighbor said she never left the apartment.
“The neighbor heard the struggle and he knocked to see if everything was okay,” Carver said. “The front door was cracked and the wife came and said everything was fine. The neighbor heard Mr. Booker moaning and he called police as soon as he left the door.”
Carver said Booker was stabbed at least seven times with an 8-inch kitchen type knife.
“The one that killed him was a stab to the neck that hit the main artery,” Carver said.
The weapon was recovered at the scene and Taunya was arrested without incident.
Booker, a partial right arm amputee, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grenada County Coroner, and his body was taken to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy.
Taunya was taken into custody and charged with murder and a violation probation. Her bond was set at $500,000. Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider confirmed that Taunya was on probation at the time of the murder and has several previous charges of drug possession, DUI’s and DUI test refusals.
This is the second homicide in Grenada within a week.
