Three dead in school bus accident

CALHOUN COUNTY – Three people are dead after authorities said an 18-wheeler collided with two school buses carrying students from Ackerman High School in Choctaw County. Calhoun County Coroner Jerry Fleming said Ackerman High School teacher Phyllis Graham, of Eupora, Ackerman High School Coach Steven Moss, of Ackerman, and truck driver Gary Bailey, of Guntown, were all killed about 2 p.m., Feb. 8.

Authorities said the school buses, loaded with Ackerman High School seniors, were heading back from a school trip to the Ole Miss campus when they approached a bridge on U.S. Highways 8 and 9 just south of Calhoun City.

Witnesses said Bailey, the truck driver, clipped the first bus and then hit the second bus head-on.

Moss was driving one of the school buses.

A triage center was set up at a nearby fire department to tend to any injured passengers and at least 10 others were reportedly taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
