Man kills wife, then himself

ST. MARTIN – Jackson County authorities said the shooting death of a man and his wife on Sunday, appears to be a murder-suicide. On Dec. 12, police responded to a call in the 7100 block of Oak Cove Drive and found the body of 31-year old Sara Porter and her husband, 31-year old Cedric Porter. Sara had been shot in the chest and stomach and Cedric had a single gunshot wound to the head. A 12-guage shotgun was recovered at the scene.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said Sara’s father called authorities after he found the bodies inside the couple’s residence. He told authorities the couple had been having marital difficulties.

“She signed divorce papers on him a week ago Friday, ” Sheriff Byrd said. “We feel like [Cedric] was very, very upset because she left him and he was probably feeling like, ‘If I can’t have her, no one can.'”

Byrd said the Porters had been together for 13 years and married for four. The couple had four children.

Byrd said the Porters had separated and Sara likely returned to the residence on Sunday to retrieve her things when she and Cedric got into an argument.

“She went by to pick up her clothes and that’s when he took the shotgun and shot her and then turned it on himself,” said Byrd. “They were both pronounced dead at the scene.”

Byrd said his investigation into the deaths is now closed.
