Suspect had no recollection of the murder

A Hinds County Judge has determined that an 85-year old man that shot his wife to death two years ago is criminally insane and unable to stand trial for her murder. Judge Winston Kidd has ordered that McKinley Lott, one of the oldest men ever charged with murder, be sent to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield.

In July 2008, Lott asked his neighbor to call 911 because his wife, 72-year old Veara Lott, had fallen. When the neighbor went to Lott’s residence, Veara was lying on the floor. She had been shot in the upper body.

Lott had no recollection of the shooting and could not answer detectives when questioned about the murder. Authorities initially believed Lott was suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.

Sex offender captured in Sunflower County

A convicted felon wanted by authorities for failing to register as a sex offender has been taken into custody. Alfred McBride, Jr., was arrested on Nov. 24, without incident, by officers with the Indianola Police Department.

McBride, who failed to register – as required by law – was convicted in 2004 for touching a child or a mentally defective incapacitated or physically helpless person for lustful purposes.

McBride had been on the run and was considered a fugitive when found.

Random shooting in Clarksdale

Police in Clarksdale are investigating an incident that resulted in one person being shot. Authorities said on Nov. 22, in the 900 block of Cuyahoga Street, an unidentified person was shot in the leg by two unknown subjects. The victim was transported to the hospital and no one is in custody. The incident remains under investigation.

Man sentenced to life in store murder

A Kosciusko man has been sentenced to life in jail for his involvement in the murder of an Attala County businessman. Barry Love was found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery of the Hill Brothers Logging Shop, on U.S. Highway 19 north.

Love was sentenced to 65 years in jail without parole.

In 2008, Love and four other men entered the Hill Brothers Shop with the intent of robbing it. Jessie Earl Hill was later found shot to death in the store and two other men were wounded.
