JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Interim Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Rev. Byron Clay says he’s been traveling around the country, trying to mobilize marchers for his group’s renewed “Poor People’s Campaign.”
Clay says he’s unsure how many will be drawn to Jackson for the June 20 demonstration at the state Capitol.
Clay was in Jackson on Wednesday to announce details about the campaign that is similar to the initiative Dr. Martin Luther King was working on before he was killed 1968.
Clay says the SCLC is “planning to organize everyone we can,” whether it’s 10,000 to 100,000 marchers.
Clay says the SCLC wants to force the nation’s leader to direct resources to depressed areas of the country rather than corporate America.
