Lientenant governor creates Senate Drug Policy Committee

Special to The Mississippi Link

Focusing on prevention, enforcement, and treatment, the Senate unanimously approved the formation of a Senate Drug Policy Committee. Senate Resolution 1 creates a committee to develop legislation, policies, and programs dealing with the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, as well as the enforcement of laws dealing with controlled substances.

“As a former deputy Sheriff and narcotics officer I have seen firsthand the tragic effects drugs have on individuals and their families,” stated Lt. Governor Bryant.

“The only way we will win the war on drugs is to think outside the box. We will look at three key areas of Prevention, Enforcement, and Treatment collectively, and not independently of one another.  The goal of the committee is simple but important: to reduce and prevent substance abuse in the state of Mississippi.”

Along with the formation of the Senate Drug Policy Committee, Lt. Governor Bryant appointed Senator Sid Albritton to serve as the chairman. A former narcotics officer and detective, Sen. Albritton brings a wealth of knowledge and experience about the many drug problems facing our state. Senator Albritton is currently finishing his term as chairman of the legislative PEER committee and has been instrumental in passing important drug prevention legislation.

Senator Sid Albritton noted, “I appreciate the Lt. Governor’s forethought and vision in recognizing the need to take a new approach in dealing with the drug problems in Mississippi. I look forward to serving as Chairman and working with the Lt. Governor and the Senate in developing legislation to address substance abuse in this State.”

Other members of the committee are Senators: David Blount (V-Chairman), Lydia Chassaniol, Vincent Davis, Deborah Dawkins, Joey Fillingane, Gary Jackson, David Jordan, Eric Powell, Michael Watson, and Lee Yancey.
