(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Jackson State University College of Liberal Arts will present the percussive dance troupe Step Afrika! in a public performance at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Rose E. McCoy Auditorium on the university’s main campus, 1400 John R. Lynch St. in Jackson.
Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in 1994, the Washington, D.C.-based dance company is renowned worldwide for using the stepping tradition to promote teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. Step Afrika! reaches thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages across North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
The performance is part of the College of Liberal Arts’ 2013-2014 “Get Ready” for Artistic Intensity Visual and Performing Arts Series. This inaugural series will bring Jackson an array of the highest-caliber professional visual and performing artists from around the world. Four signature events, along with related performances and exhibits by JSU faculty and students and other renowned artists and speakers, are scheduled from September 2013 through April 2014 at JSU’s Rose E. McCoy Auditorium, art galleries and venues on campus. JSU students will participate in master classes and rehearsals and outreach efforts with Jackson Public Schools, and community organizations will allow local youth to benefit from arts education events. Tickets for Step Afrika! are $15 and $5 for JSU students. Subscriptions and advance tickets will be sold online beginning Sept. 6 for the entire “Get Ready” for Artistic Intensity Visual and Performing Arts Series. Subscribers will receive a discount for the four signature events as well as priority seating for all performances. The series subscription cost is $50 and $25 for students. Individual tickets for signature events are $15 and $5 for JSU students.
