After a long day of fishing, one man’s day took a turn for the worse when he drove his car into the water at the old Broadwater property, WLOX reported.

Memphis woman booked on drug charges

Authorities said a 38-year-old woman from Memphis was arrested on Aug. 9, after they found more than 4 pounds of marijuana in her car during a traffic stop. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department told WTVA that Tammy Vanessa Thomas, 38, was arrested after her vehicle was pulled over on U.S. Highway 45.

Authorities say they recovered about four pounds, 11 ounces of marijuana from her vehicle. […]

Tourism leaders seek higher funding

Tourism leaders are asking for an increase in funding from officials of the city of Corinth and Alcorn County.

The Daily Corinthian reported the Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen and Alcorn County Board of Supervisors will complete their budgets in September for the coming fiscal year.

The Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau wants an increase in its monthly allotment of tourism tax funding from $42,000 to $45,000. Crossroads Arena is poised to receive $200,000 from the tourism budget, down from $250,000 in the current fiscal year. […]

Sentencing reset for lab owner

A federal judge has reset the sentencing date for an environmental laboratory owner in Mississippi who was convicted on federal charges of falsifying records on industrial wastewater samples.

Tennie White was the sole operator of Mississippi Environmental Analytical Laboratories Inc.

She was convicted in May in U.S. District Court in Jackson on two counts of making false statements and one count of obstruction. […]

Man, child killed in collision

A Maben man and a toddler from Greenville were killed in a three-vehicle collision that occurred Monday morning in Washington County, WXVT reported.

The collision happened on Mississippi Highway 438, west of Arcola, between Spring Lake and West Park roads.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the cause.

The deceased are identified as David Leigh Kirkman, 53, of Maben, and Leo Marshall Fields II, 2, of Greenville. Both were ejected from their respective vehicles and suffered head trauma. […]

Freeze says Mississippi freshmen will contribute

Mississippi’s celebrated freshman class won’t be standing on the sidelines for long.

Second-year coach Hugh Freeze said the team’s most highly rated recruits – like defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, receiver Laquon Treadwell and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil – have played well during the first two weeks of preseason camp and will contribute immediately when the Rebels open the season against Vanderbilt on Aug. 29.

The trio of five-star prospects will be surrounded by other young faces. Freeze expects around 10 freshmen to make their debut against the Commodores.

Freeze said it’s “certainly a challenge” to make sure all the freshmen are ready to contribute. He said the coaching staff is trying to make sure it doesn’t ask the young players to do too much. […]

Police said they have a suspect in custody in connection with a man found shot to death outside a residence early Tuesday morning.

Officer Colendula Green said 23-year-old Anthony Watson has been charged with the murder of 22-year-old Sherrod Vaughn. Green said Vaughn was found lying face down in the front yard of a residence in the 2000 block of Wisteria Street. […]

A 63-year-old Columbia man has been booked on charges of inappropriately touching a 14-year-old girl. WDAM reports that Larry James Watts surrendered to police earlier this month.

Police said they received a complaint regarding sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl.

UMMC to enter lease agreement for Grenada Lake Medical Center

With approval Thursday from the State Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees, University of Mississippi Medical Center leaders will sign an agreement to lease the 156-bed Grenada Lake Medical Center from the Grenada County Board of Supervisors.
 
Under the agreement, UMMC would begin managing GLMC Sept. 1, and lease the facility beginning Jan. 1. Under the terms, UMMC would pay the county about $1.8 million annually to retire the facility’s $37.4 million debt. […]
