West Point championship QB Doug Kenna dies

Edgar Douglas “Doug” Kenna II, the quarterback of West Point’s 1944 undefeated national championship team and former president of the National Association of Manufacturers, has died. He was 88.

Kenna died Jan. 28 in North Palm Beach, Fla., where he had lived for years, according to Nicholas Hollis, a longtime friend who worked with him at the National Association of Manufacturers in the 1970s. Howard-Price Funeral Home in North Palm Beach confirmed his death. […]

Hundreds attend funeral for Ohio Players frontman 'Sugarfoot' Bonner

Several hundred people gathered Saturday to say a musical and a spiritual goodbye Saturday to Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, one of the granddads of funk music.

Bonner was a founder and lead singer of the Ohio Players, a Grammy-nominated band that originated in Southwest Ohio and dominated R&B and pop music in the 1970s.

Bonner, reportedly a father of 12 and a grandfather of 22, died of cancer on Jan. 27. He was 69. […]

Woman gets a year in jail for exploiting 92-year-old

A Tupelo woman has been ordered to serve a year in prison for exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

Attorney General Jim Hood says Lucy Judon, 55, of Tupelo pleaded guilty at a hearing on Friday.

Judon was accused of taking over $22,000 from a 92-year-old woman she worked for as a private-sitter. She is also accused of opening credit card accounts in the woman’s name and making nearly $3,000 in charges. […]

Debate on funding for private schools shapes up

The state House could be roiled by multiple debates in coming days over spending public money to send Mississippi students to private schools.
But prospects for such legislation remain murky in the Senate, where leaders have made no clear show of support for the concept.

The House Education Committee has passed two bills that could pay to send students to private schools. The first, House Bill 906, is a measure called Opportunity Scholarships, proposed by Republican Gov. Phil Bryant. The second, House Bill 1004, would provide vouchers using public money for the state’s 60,000-plus special education students in public schools to attend private schools. […]

Mississippi forward Aaron Jones is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a loss to Kentucky earlier this month.

The 6-foot-9 sophomore has been one of the 16th-ranked Rebels’ most important reserves this season, averaging 3.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He’s also second on the team with 32 blocks.

Two customers who complained of oral injuries after eating country fried steak has led to a recall in nearly 30 states by AdvancePierre Foods.

Funeral held for former Judge William Myers

Retired Judge William Harbin Myers, who served on the Mississippi Court of Appeals and was the Gulf Coast chancery judge who oversaw Mississippi’s landmark lawsuit against the tobacco industry, died Thursday, Feb. 7.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 11, in Ocean Springs. Myers was 71.

Mississippi Court of Appeals Chief Judge L. Joseph Lee said Friday, “I am honored to have served with Judge Myers during his entire tenure on the court.  He was always pleasant, kind hearted and genuinely cared for all,  and was well loved by everyone on the court.” […]

After a rape case was reported to the Jackson Police Department late Monday night, Feb. 4, online crime records reveal the Londonderry Drive rape is only one of four detectives are working to solve, WLOX reported.

According to crime records on the Jackson Police Department website, four rape cases have been reported between Jan. 14 – Jan. 28. The first incident reportedly occurred in the 3700 block of Timber Crest Drive on Jan. 16. Four days later and 12.5 miles away, two more rapes were reported. […]

Woman stabbed in grocery store parking lot

Authorities are now saying what they believed to be an incident of road rage in the parking lot of a grocery store may have been the result of an ongoing dispute.

Police said a woman was slashed in the throat and neck multiple times outside a Kroger at Crosstown in Lee County on Saturday.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital and her injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. […]

Tornado strikes Hattiesburg; USM declares state of emergency

A tornado ripped through historic Hattiesburg Sunday as part of a wave of severe storms that downed trees, damaged buildings and injured more than a dozen people.

The twister traveled down one of Hattiesburg’s main streets and mangled homes, commercial buildings and structures on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Emergency officials said at least 10 people were injured in surrounding Forrest County and three were hurt to the west in Marion County, but they weren’t aware of any deaths. […]
