LUCEDALE – A 20-year-old Jones County man is in critical condition at a Mobile, Ala. hospital following a swimming accident on Saturday.
WLOX reported that Robert Whitehead is in ICU at USA Medical Center in Mobile after an incident at the Pascagoula River. George County authorities said Whitehead was swimming with a church group when he went under water and never resurfaced.
A family friend told deputies, Whitehead was reportedly attempting to tie a rope swing when a strong current took him under.
Whitehead was pulled from the water and a bystander reportedly began chest compressions on him.
“They did everything they could to help him until the ambulance arrived,” George County Sgt. Pat Dueitt said.
The accident happened near the area of Plum Bluff in the Basin Community just south of Lucedale. Whitehead was airlifted to USA Medical Center immediately after the incident.
