No. 25 Ole Miss gets big road win at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Jeff Scott ran for 164 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a 73-yard punt return, helping No. 25 Mississippi roll over reeling Texas 44-23 on Saturday night.

Bo Wallace passed for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Rebels (3-0), who led 14-0 midway through the first quarter before Texas scored 23 straight points.

The Rebels rallied when Andrew Ritter kicked a 52-yard field goal on the last play of the first half and Wallace directed consecutive touchdown drives in the third quarter… […]

Freeze says Mississippi freshmen will contribute

Mississippi’s celebrated freshman class won’t be standing on the sidelines for long.

Second-year coach Hugh Freeze said the team’s most highly rated recruits – like defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, receiver Laquon Treadwell and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil – have played well during the first two weeks of preseason camp and will contribute immediately when the Rebels open the season against Vanderbilt on Aug. 29.

The trio of five-star prospects will be surrounded by other young faces. Freeze expects around 10 freshmen to make their debut against the Commodores.

Freeze said it’s “certainly a challenge” to make sure all the freshmen are ready to contribute. He said the coaching staff is trying to make sure it doesn’t ask the young players to do too much. […]

Ole Miss QB feels healthy as practice begins

Donte Moncrief isn’t concerned about Mississippi quarterback Bo Wallace’s surgically repaired right shoulder.

Thrilled might be the better term.

Ole Miss football player killed in car accident

The Old Miss Rebels “are hurting” head coach Hugh Freeze said after one of their own was killed in a car accident Wednesday afternoon.

Park Coleman Stevens was killed on impact when his truck hit the back of a semi that was crossing a four-lane highway in Chickasaw County, Miss.

Although he was not immediately identified, Cpl. Chris Turnipseed told the Mississippi Daily Journal that “the driver of the pickup was killed upon impact.” […]

Mississippi's Johnson out with broken fibula

Mississippi defensive end C.J. Johnson is out for the rest of spring practice after suffering a broken fibula in his right leg during Wednesday’s practice.

Johnson was expected to have surgery Thursday, according to school officials. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said Johnson’s recovery time is expected to be about three months.

Mississippi’s Freeze receives raise, extension

Mississippi football coach Hugh Freeze has received a one-year contract extension and a $500,000 raise, increasing his base salary to $2 million per season after leading the Rebels to a bowl appearance in his first season.

Freeze was hired last December and signed an incentive-laden contract that included a $1.5 million base salary. His new contract lasts through 2016 and includes a $100,000 bonus per Southeastern Conference win, beginning with the second victory of the season. […]
