Two men shot to death over weekend in Columbus

COLUMBUS – Interim police chief Selvain McQueen said his department is investigating the murders of two men found shot to death in separate incidents over the weekend. Just after 10 a.m., on Saturday, three fishermen found the body of 34-year-old Columbus resident Alfonso Lathan Jr. near the boat landing at the Luxapalila Creek Recreation area near Highway 69.

McQueen said Lathan had been shot multiple times and a trail of blood was found leading from the restroom area to the river bank where Lathan was pronounced dead.

“We believe the [victim] was shot between 6:30 and 7 a.m.,” McQueen said. “And we have no suspects or motive at this time.”

McQueen also said early Sunday morning, about 1 a.m., a motorist called 911 after he nearly ran over the body of 35-year-old Tedd Wood. Wood was found in the 300 block of 8th Street North.

“He wasn’t in the intersection, but middle ways of the block,” McQueen said. “And he also had been shot multiple times.”

Wood was pronounced dead at the scene, and autopsies on Wood and Lathan were scheduled for Monday.
