Doctors want it to be an annual event

The village of Glendora recently hosted their first health fair for its citizens at local bed and breakfast. The health fair was the collaborative effort of a medical team from Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in New York and Glendora‘s municipal officials.

Drs. Mildred Clark and Mary Alice Johnson-Crockett spearheaded the all female medical team mission.

According to Glendora’s mayor, Johnnie Thomas, the medical group has made numerous trips to the Greenville area, but this was their first missionary effort in Glendora.

“We are very pleased with the turn out,” Thomas said.

Officials said about 70 percent of Glendora’s female population attended the health fair and about 85 percent of the male residents. According to the 2000 census, the village of Glendora, in Tallahatchie County, has a population of 285.

Mayor Thomas said Dr. Clark is looking to have Mt. Calvary formerly adopt Glendora to make the health fair an annual event.

Mayor acquitted for using city funds to buy gas

A Hancock County jury acquitted Waveland mayor Tommy Longo on charges of embezzlement. Longo was arrested on Jan. 22, 2010 for allegedly using his city-issued Fuelman card for his personal vehicle on several occasions.

Longo’s attorneys claimed Longo used his personal car for city business.

Prosecutors said Longo used the card between September 2008 and August 2009 for purchases in the amount of $1,116, and that he converted the fuel into personal use “the second he put it into his vehicle,” the Associated Press reported.
