One dead; two others injured in Carroll County shooting

CARROLLTON – One man is dead and two others were injured after they were allegedly shot by a Carroll County man following an earlier altercation at a local nightclub, Sheriff Jerry Carver said.

William “Booney” Jefferson, 44, of Carrollton, was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds early Saturday morning, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Elbert “Stank” Blackmon, 37, of McCarley, was arrested and charged with his murder. It’s the first murder in Carroll County in two years.

Sheriff Carver said Jefferson’s sister, Tonda Jefferson, and another family member, Joseph St. Clair, of Missouri, were standing with Jefferson outside his home on June 6, when they were also shot, both in the arm. They were also taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, by private vehicle, where they were later released. Blackmon was charged with two counts of aggravated assault for their injuries.

Carver said the incident reportedly began in the parking lot of the T & G Club on Winona Road in Carrollton where Blackmon and Jefferson “had some kind of disagreement or argument.” Carver said everyone had left the club when Blackmon reportedly turned up near Jefferson’s home with a shotgun.

“The actual shooting took place in the driveway of the victim’s home about 1:30 a.m.,” Carver said. “He lived there with his sister, Donna Jefferson. But we don’t know if they had just got there or if there were already there and came back outside.”

Carver said several other people were standing outside the home and “ran for cover or hit the ground” when the shots were fired.

Jefferson was hit three times in the upper arm, chest and shoulder area. Jefferson’s sister and St. Clair, “were hit with the same type projectile as the deceased …which appeared to be a buckshot,” Carver said. The weapon has not been recovered. Carver later ordered an autopsy and a toxicology report on Jefferson.

“He [Jefferson] was still talking when the deputies first arrived,” Carver said. “And they got him in the ambulance. But he wasn’t able to tell who shot him because it was dark and the shooter was a pretty good distance, maybe 50 or 60 feet, from them in a wooded area with bushes. And none of the others could identify the shooter either.”

Carver said Blackmon immediately became a person of interest because of the earlier altercation.

He was spotted a few hours after the shooting driving a Ford F-250 pick up truck on U.S. Highway 82 between Winona and Carrollton, and he was arrested without incident.

Blackmon, who has no prior felonies in Carroll County, appeared before Judge Jimmy Avant on Monday where his bond was set at $100,000. Officials at the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correct-ional Facility in Vaiden confirmed that Blackmon posted the full amount of the bond, in cash, and was later released.

Carver said Blackmon has not yet requested a preliminary hearing.
