Nurse arrested for unlawful possession of drugs

AMORY – A nurse at a Monroe County nursing home has been arrested and charged with several counts of unlawful possession of controlled substances. Tanya Channell, of Fulton, was indicted by the Monroe County Grand Jury on April 7 on four felony charges that she acquired or obtained possession of controlled substances or prescriptions by misrepresentation and fraud.

Attorney General Jim Hood said the indictment alleges, on count one, that while working as an LPN at the nursing home, Channell “acquired the substance fentanyl from a duragesic patch by signing out one patch without dispensing it to a resident under the guise that she wasted the substance.”

Count two alleges that Channell “acquired the substance fentanyl from a duragestic patch by signing out two patches without dispensing them to another resident under the guise of providing medical care.”

Count three alleges that Channell “acquired the substance Lortab by signing out 24 tablets without dispensing them to a third resident under the guise of providing medical care.”

And count four alleges that Channell “acquired the substance darvocet by signing out 13 tablets without dispensing them to a fourth resident under the guise of providing medical care.”

Channell was taken into custody and her bond was set at $3,000.

No court date for Channell has been set and if convicted on all charges, she faces up to 20 years in jail.
