Man’s body found in trailer

Pontotoc officials have ordered an autopsy on the body of a man found in a trailer on Friday. Authorities have not identified the man, his race or any other details about his death, other than there appeared to be no physical signs of trauma or violence to the body.

Authorities are unclear if foul play was involved.

The trailer is located on Pontocola Road near the Lee-Pontotoc County line.

Burglary suspect at large

Bolivar County officials are looking for a man that broke into a residence and attacked the homeowner and his friend. James Barnes, of Beulah, told authorities when he returned home on July 6 he was ambushed by two men.

Barnes said the intruders accused him of stealing a truck and then sprayed him with Mace and physically attacked him.

One suspect was taken into custody, but authorities are still looking for his accomplice.

Boyle man drowns

WABG is reporting that a man from Boyle drowned after he and several others swung out over the Pearl River by a rope in a tree. John Eric Roberson, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities said he jumped into the Pearl River across from the Ratliff Ferry Trading Post.

WABG said there is a long rope tied to a tree that several people, including Roberson, held onto. Reportedly, friends asked Roberson if he was okay once he hit the river, and he said he was, but he drowned shortly thereafter.

Officials said the area where Roberson was found is over 27-feet deep and people mistakenly think the area is safe.

Jackson State gets Science grant

Congressman Bennie Thompson announced that The National Science Foundation has awarded Jackson State University a grant for $199,386. The grant will benefit the school’s project, “Development of Laboratory Modules to Enhance Inquiry-guided Learning and Implement Biofuel-related Experiments.”

The project is being directed by Jaehwa Choi.

Health Department gets $3.9 million grant

Congressman Thompson also announced that the United States Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant to the Mississippi Department of Health to fund their hospital preparedness programs.

The grant amount is $3,954,888.
