Man gets 5 years for scamming homeowner

JACKSON – A Clinton resident who hired himself out as a contractor is going to jail for false pretense after being found guilty by a Yazoo County jury, Attorney General Jim Hood said. Michael Martin, 35, was tried in the Circuit Court of Yazoo County before Judge Jannie Lewis. After two hours of deliberation, the jury found Martin guilty of false pretense.

The case against Martin began when his victim inherited property in Yazoo County. Hood said the victim’s home developed water damage and contracted with Martin to do the repair work.

Instead, Martin created a series of fictitious invoices for work he did not perform.

Judge Lewis sentenced Martin to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with three years suspended, two years to serve.

“The moral of this story is that crime doesn’t pay and you’re foolish if you think you won’t get caught,” said Attorney General Hood.

This case was prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorneys General Myrick Jackson and Patrick Beasley with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
