Victim ok after emergency surgery

Columbus police said a 24-year old man was arrested on Aug. 12 after he allegedly stabbed his cousin near a grocery store on Fourth Street South. Brandon Sanders, was arrested about 10:30 p.m., the night of the assault, after he allegedly attacked 32-year old Tavares Sanders.

Police said the incident occurred near M&M Grocery and that a passerby found Tavares bleeding from his side, across the street from the store. Tavares was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle where he underwent emergency surgery.

Brandon was charged with aggravated assault.

Public housing opens in Waveland

For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, Hancock County is offering public housing to residents. Officials said Oak Haven is a $12.3 million 80-unit housing complex geared toward senior citizens.

It’s one of two public housing projects in Hancock County since the devastation following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The second complex is the $21.7 million Bay Pines project in Bay St. Louis. That 100-unit development is currently under construction.

Oak Haven was partially funded through a federal Community Development Block Grant, that was administered by the Mississippi Development Authority.

Recliner company expands their plant

A furniture company said its expansion in northeast Mississippi will bring 200 jobs to the area in the next two years, and an additional 400 jobs within the next five years.

Southern Motion broke ground in Pontotoc for a new 180,000-square foot production facility, and they invested $7 million in the new plant after the state’s economic agency, Mississippi Development Authority, provided incentives to help with Southern Motion’s expansion.
