Mom was in Wal-Mart

A Hattiesburg woman was arrested Sunday for leaving her 9-month old boy in a hot car while she shopped at Wal-Mart. Bobby Joe McSwain, 20, was charged with felony child neglect after authorities said she left the infant in the car while she went in the store on U.S. Highway 49.

A passerby reportedly saw the baby in the car after 5 p.m., and alerted authorities. Police removed the infant from the car and waited for the mother to return to her vehicle.

McSwain was then taken into custody and transported to the Forrest County jail.

Authorities said it was unclear how long the infant had been in the car, but a family member was given temporary custody of the baby.

McSwain was due to appear in court this week.

Man drowns at family outing

WTVA reported that a 23-year old man from Senatobia drowned this weekend while he and his family were swimming at Sardis Lake. Brandon Shorty was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was pulled from an area of the lake shortly after 9 p.m., on July 4.

The coroner said cramps may have led to Shorty’s drowning.

Man shot protecting wife

Police said a Jackson man was shot several times last month after thieves tried to rob his wife at a local Laundromat. Carl Mormon, 52, is recovering at a Jackson hospital after he tried to fight two men who were trying to steal his wife’s purse at a Laundromat on West Capital and Longino streets.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m., on June 26. The two male suspects drove off in a dark-colored car. No other details about the men was given.
