Fugitive captured after shooting man and assaulting officer

HOLMES COUNTY – Officials said a fugitive who had been running from police after allegedly shooting a man during a robbery and assaulting a police officer, was arrested Saturday while trying to pick up his tax refund check.

Tyrone Pointer, 26, of Vaiden, was taken into custody at More Money on U.S. Highway 12, while officials had the business under surveillance. Pointer was wanted in connection with the armed robbery and shooting of Shannon Kirkwood, of Lexington, on Jan. 13, and for ramming Vaiden Police Officer Ted Doster, with his car.

Chief Roosevelt March, of the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department, said their search for Pointer began last month when Pointer, Vernon Streeter and Eric Gray drove to the 17 One Stop on U.S. Highway 17, just north of Lexington. March said Kirkwood, the victim in the assault, was sitting in his vehicle when Pointer allegedly pulled a gun and told him to “empty his pockets.”

“The store was already closed and Kirkwood was waiting on someone else to meet him there and take her home,” March said. “And these fellows came up and jumped in the car with him, and the other fellow, Pointer, came over and robbed him.”

March said after Kirkwood gave Pointer “about $40,” Pointer allegedly shot him in the hand.

“They also made him get of out of the car and they took his car radio out of his dash,” March said.

Pointer, Gray and Streeter allegedly left the parking lot and Kirkwood drove himself to the hospital.

Streeter and Gray were apprehended later by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department and charged with armed robbery. Bond for both men was set at $45,000.

Once Pointer returned to Vaiden in Carroll County, officials said Officer Doster reportedly pulled him over for a routine traffic stop when Pointer allegedly rammed him with his vehicle. Doster sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Authorities spotted Pointer last week near Valley Hill in Carroll County and attempted to take him into custody. But Pointer again eluded capture by jumping out of the car and running into the woods.

Pointer was considered armed and dangerous and Holmes County officials were assisted in his capture by the Greenwood Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshalls.

Pointer, a convicted felon, who has several prior drug convictions, is being held in Holmes County without bond pending further charges from other counties.
