Sunflower County man faces drug trial

Jury selections have begun for a man charged with possession of and selling crack cocaine. Typhon Armstrong has been charged with two counts of possession with intent to distribute in excess of 50 grams of crack cocaine on or about June 2006.

WABG reported that since Armstrong has prior drug convictions in Sunflower County, he faces stiff jail time if convicted in federal court.

Interim U.S. Attorney William Martin enhanced the penalties against Armstrong, and if convicted, he may get no less than 30 years in prison on count one, no less than 20 years on count two and no more than life on count three.

WABG reported that Gabriel Guyton and Deartrius Jones are also defendants in this case.

Deadbeat dad gets five years

An Alabama man was sentenced to five years in jail for failing to support his child after a judge gave him one year to come up with the money. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said Isiah Golden, of Mobile, Ala., pled guilty to failure to felony non-support on Jan. 5, 2009 before Madison County Circuit Judge William Chapman, III.

Chapman ordered Golden to come up with $20,000 in back child support or face jail time. General Hood said Golden appeared before Chapman in court empty handed.

“This defendant had three chancery court contempts,” Hood said. “It is clear he had no intentions of paying. Hopefully two years behind bars will help him re-think his intentions. If not, he will have to spend three more in a jail cell.”

Golden was sentenced to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with two years to serve and three years probation. Golden was also ordered to pay $300 a month during his probation until the total arrearage of $20,000 is paid.

This case was prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Deshun T. Martin, Director of the Attorney General’s Child Desertion Unit.
